ERM Webinar: Sustainable Steel - More than net zero and implications across the value chain

Anne-Claire Howard was appointed as ResponsibleSteel’s first CEO in March 2021 joining from her previous role as Executive Director of Bettercoal. She leads the steel industry’s first global multi-stakeholder standard and certification initiative aimed at maximizing steel’s contribution to a sustainable society. She has over 15 years’ experience in raw materials (mining, oil and gas) sustainability, good governance and responsible supply chains having held positions with Royal Dutch Shell, Eurasia Group and the International Finance Corporation, Adam Smith International & Doctors Without Borders. Throughout her career, Anne-Claire has focused on the commercially sustainable development of oil, gas & mining projects and extractive sector governance.

Alan has over 30 years’ experience of working with global companies and governments on sustainability. He joined the world’s largest Steel company ArcelorMittal in 2014 as their Head of Sustainable Development and Corporate Responsibility. Since then, he has helped develop a sustainability framework ranging from products to process. He is the Co-chairman of ResponsibleSteel and sits on the steering board of the Initiative for Responsible Mining. For nine years, he was a commissioner with the UK Prime Minister’s Sustainable Development Commission. In June 1998, he was awarded the OBE; in 2005, the US-based Rainforest Alliance presented him with a lifelong award; in 2013 he was made an Honorary Fellow of the Society for the Environment and was made a Clinton Foundation Global Citizen in 2016.

Mr. Paul, graduated in Metallurgical Engg. And joined Tata Steel Ltd. (TSL) in 1986 as Graduate Trainee. He started his career at Steel Melting Shops where working in various capacities till 1998. After completion of a Senior Management program at CEDEP, France, he moved on to assume Leadership roles in areas of General Management in TSL. He assumed the position of GM (Town Services) in January 2003 and under his leadership, the Town Services Division became an independent company by the name of Jamshedpur Utilities & Services Company Limited, which he headed as Managing Director till March 2010. He was the VP (Corporate Services) of TSL from April 2010 till March 2013 after which he joined Tata Metaliks Ltd. as Managing Director. From July 2017, he has assumed the role of VP, Safety Health & Sustainability at TSL. Apart from being an active member of CII, FICCI & BCCI and providing guidance as Chairman /Member of the Board of various organisations such as mJunction, JUSCO, Tata Metaliks, Tata Pigments, NIFFT etc., he is an avid reader, keen cricketer and a golfer.

Dirk is a senior partner and global account director in steel and mining at ERM. For more than 25 years, Dirk has been providing environmental, health, safety, risk, social consulting and sustainability services related solutions to the world’s leading industrial organizations. He has a broad cross-sectoral experience comprising of extractives (oil & gas and metals & mining), steel, automotive, (petro) chemical, pharmaceutical, technology, and beyond. Dirk has a strong passion for the metals and mining industry, the low carbon economy transition journey that this sector and its whole value chain faces.

Dirk is ERM’s representative in the ResponsibleSteel initiative and is currently focusing his efforts on transformational decarbonization clusters and energy hubs; whilst looking into more sustainable solutions using hydrogen, renewables and carbon capture.

Matt Klein is ERM’s Managing Partner and leads the Low Carbon Economy Transition Director business in the Asia Pacific Region. This encompasses leading ERM’s services in climate change, renewable energy, gas transition and retirement of fossil fuel intensive assets for across ERM’s 26 offices in Asia Pacific. He has more than 25 years’ experience in industry and consulting, providing commercial and strategic advice to executives across many industries, including Finance, Infrastructure, Power, Mining and Oil and Gas.
