ERM Dolphyn Project – Large Scale Hydrogen Production from Offshore Floating Wind

In this presentation, ERM Partner Kevin Kinsella will describe ERM’s Dolphyn project, concerning the production of ‘green’ hydrogen at scale from offshore wind. The project comprises an innovative floating semi-submersible (floating platform) design with integrated wind turbine, PEM electrolysis and desalination facilities. It will enable the most favorable UK offshore wind resources to be accessed in deep water at distances from land up to several hundred kilometers.

ERM assisted the Offshore Wind Innovation Hub, with Offshore Renewable Energy Catapult as a key delivery partner, to analyze the potential economic impacts of different UK hydrogen market development scenarios. The associated barriers and enablers underlying these scenarios were considered, and the areas of the UK supply chain that may be at the greatest level of readiness to capture the potential opportunities were identified. In this presentation the key assumptions and outcomes of the analysis will be presented by ERM Senior Consultant Molly Iliffe, providing insights into the potential economic benefits to the UK of different policy pathways, required public and private investment levels, and key areas of the supply chain which UK businesses may be best placed to capture.

Kevin Kinsella

Partner at ERM

Kevin heads ERM's Energy Transition business for Northern Europe, advising Clients on Low Carbon Energy Transition strategy and de-risking technological solutions, particularly related to hydrogen. He has over 30 years of experience of onshore and offshore oil and gas and hydrogen projects and has carried out major international projects for Clients in the UK, Europe, United States and Middle East.

Kevin is the originator and Project Director of ERM's Dolphyn project (production of bulk scale hydrogen from floating offshore wind) and represents ERM on several gas network projects evaluating the feasibility of using hydrogen to replace natural gas for UK heat. He has recently been involved in providing strategic advice to a major US energy supplier on green hydrogen production, power to gas and hydrogen transport (refuelling depot) projects.

Molly Iliffe

Senior consultant at ERM

Molly is an experienced project manager and senior consultant working in the Energy and Climate Change Team in ERM’s Edinburgh office. Molly has considerable experience in energy transition, renewables and hydrogen, with more than thirteen years experience in the power industry and particular expertise in financial modelling, technical and commercial advisory and project management.

Molly’s recent hydrogen experience includes building models and business cases for a wide variety of purposes, including project feasibility financial modelling, concept select, economic impact assessment, supply chain assessment and market analysis. Currently, Molly is working with a wind farm developer in Scotland developing feasibility stage modelling of green hydrogen from onshore wind, including Capex and Opex estimates over time.
