ERM, the world’s largest specialist sustainability consultancy, has announced the latest update to its decarbonization program as the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi) approves its science-based emission reduction targets in alignment with the SBTi Net-Zero Standard.

The SBTi, a global body which independently assesses companies’ targets, promotes best practice in science-based target setting to combat current inconsistencies.

SBTi has approved ERM’s net-zero science-based targets, which include GHG emissions reductions targets to achieve net-zero by 2040 across ERM’s operations and value chain.

Sabine Hoefnagel, Global Leader of Sustainability and Risk at ERM said: “At ERM, we are committed to setting ambitious sustainability goals for our business and ensuring that our climate action is in line with the latest science.

“SBTi’s approval of our net-zero targets therefore marks an important milestone for ERM. By striving for best practice in emissions reduction throughout our own value chain, we are well-positioned to support our clients on their decarbonization journeys as we work together to help deliver a net-zero economy.”

ERM was one of the earliest professional services firms to adopt the SBTi in 2019 with validated GHG emissions reduction targets. In 2021, the company updated its targets with SBTi to align with the 1.5°C climate scenario. Since then, the SBTi Net-Zero Standard has been launched to provide a clear, and science-based definition of net-zero.

ERM will provide details of its performance in the annual Sustainability Report to be published in 2024.

Notes to Editors

The Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi) is a global body enabling businesses to set ambitious emissions reductions targets in line with the latest climate science. It is focused on mobilizing companies across the world to halve emissions before 2030 and achieve net-zero emissions before 2050.

The initiative is a collaboration between CDP, the United Nations Global Compact, World Resources Institute (WRI) and the World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF). The SBTi call to action is one of the We Mean Business Coalition commitments.
